It's safe to say most of the new employees at Shakey's newest location at Waipahu Town Center probably have never had a slice of the world-famous pizza before or heard the banjo playing at the popular eatery but you get the feeling they understand what all the excitement is about."Everyone in there said my parents remember Shakey's or even some of the actually have heard stories of Shakey's so it's good to have that real positive energy from these young ones that are coming in,” said owner, Brad Vandeman.
"It's a great experience brining Shakey's back -- we started in 1954,” said assistant manager, Kyle Galdeira.
Many have fond memories of Shakey's in the 60's and 70's in Hawaii.
It's previous location on Rycroft Street was a family spot for years.
"They're very excited, Shakey's USA is very excited to be coming back to Hawaii,” said Vandeman.
The first of three planned restaurants is scheduled to open on February 24th.
The 5,500 foot Waipahu location will employ 35 people.
"Most of them are from the local area here, Waipahu, Waianae, we have a few from town,” said Vandeman.
"It's great to see not only the building come up from the ground up -- but also a lot of folks here are young adults kind of getting a start in the job world -- so being a part of that is a really good experience,” said Galdeira.
Local owner Brad Vandeman knows opening a restaurant in a climate when many are closing their doors weekly is a tremendous risk but one he's willing to take.
"We basically have rights to the state of Hawaii so the idea we will be opening three in five years, explains Vandeman.
Two future sites have yet to be determined.
Those who've received word of the restaurants return believe it will be a draw.
On Monday, new employees gathered for their orientation, a chance to pick up uniforms and meet new colleagues.
