It's called Sandbox Hawaii, 32 acres of state-owned land that is now home to an off-road park. The park is an example of what can happen when a community is driven.
Four years ago, a Kalihi man had a vision to turn state land filled with rocks and kiawe trees into an off-road park.
"It was growing up in Kalihi you know we used to ride our bikes over at Susannah Wesley there isn't a place like that anymore," said Reid Shimabukuro.
So Shimabukuro and six others met with the state to see what it would take to build an off-road park. After hundreds of hours of volunteer work and crash courses on the county's grading and grubbing permit process and the state's clean water act, the park is complete.
"This project has built nothing but character, and obviously as we stuck to our goals for the kids this is the result of it," said Wayne Rhoden.
"If you believe it, you will see it, if you believe it you will see it and Reid and Wayne they believed it and everybody else here believed it and now you see it," said Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona.
Rhoden gave us a look at the park's Supercross and BMX Track. Former city councilman and two-time national motorcross champion John DeSoto says the park gives residents legal options.
"We have a lot of football fields, we have a lot of tennis courts, skateboard rinks but we only have one facility and that's in Kahuku and that's open only on weekends by having something like this - the kids can release they energy and stay more focus during the weekday," said DeSoto who was known as the Flyin Hawaiian and was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
The park also offers a track for radio control vehicles and for bigger wheels, more than an acre of off-roading.
"I think this will give us the opportunity to at least let people know what's available to them and at the same time educating them how to off-road and actually take care of the aina out here," said Rich Tuason of Ohana Trails. "I look forward to being able to hear my son say, dad take me to the track instead of saying dad can I play play station."
Part of a vision that is now reality.
The park opens on October 1. A user fee has yet to be determined.
