Ten people are without a home tonight after a fire destroyed a house in Salt Lake.
The fire started about 6:30 p.m. on Likini Street.
Three people were home at the time but managed to get out.
The fire quickly spread to a second house, badly damaging that one as well.
No one was injured, but a cat died.
Witnesses heard explosions as the fire burned.
"The fire was already substantially burning and it's not unusual to have ordinary combustibles vent their pressure, containers like cans, paint, solvents, or hair spray - ordinary household products that make a very loud noise when they vent, due to the heat and pressure build up," said Captain Terry Seelig, from the Honolulu Fire Department.
Total damage to both structures is $510,000
The cause of the fire was later found to have started from an outside patio area. An occupant of the house had used a welding torch to weld the frame of a mo-ped and did not notice that he had slowly started a fire on the mo-ped's seat. That caught fire and later spread through the house.
