It's a hot button issue that got people fired up once again on Saturday.

A group of protestors gathered at Haleiwa Boat Harbor to rally against what they say is illegal activity by shark tour operators.

But those companies say they're not breaking the law.

More than 40 people from Safe Waters for Hawaii united in protest.

The demonstration was heated between the group and two of Oahu's North Shore shark tour companies.

"We need jobs for local families. Yes, save the jobs but don't feed sharks," said one protestor.

Safe Waters for Hawaii waved photos claiming the tour operators are going against state and federal laws.

"The thing is they are feeding the sharks and that's illegal, that's why we're here," said Mahina Chillingworth with Safe Waters for Hawaii.

State rules ban shark feeding in waters three miles off-shore. In 2006, the federal government followed suit with similar rules for waters past three miles.

"These kinds of photos, illegally feeding sharks and that's why we're upset," said Chillingworth.

North Shore Shark Adventures and Hawaii Shark Encounters say they abide by the law - and those photos were taken before that federal law kicked in.

"We don't have to feed these sharks, have been out here over 60 years, they're bottom feeding sharks, they've been following the crab trapping boats," said Stefanie Brendel with Hawaii Shark Encounters.

She says these allegations are yet another blow to their business.

"This has been obvious for a year and they have voiced it loud and proud during many meetings that we are going to shut these people down," said Brendel.

"Not here to hamper on their business, we respect their business, all we're saying is stop the feeding," said Chillingworth.

House and Senate bills introduced this legislative session hope to end this debate. One would prohibit commercial shark tours from operating in the state. Another would prohibit the use of state boating facilities and parks for shark tours - except for those already in business on the North Shore.

"We're done arguing and this is now at the state legislature and we hope that they can see the big picture and actually weigh the pros and cons," said Brendel.

There is also an ongoing investigation by the State Department of Land and Natural Resources looking into whether illegal feeding of sharks is taking place.

TO: Freediver808: Compare the few crabbing boats to the swarm of shark tour boats, the crabbing boats are definitely outnumbered. In addition, the crabbers throw 'crumbs' into the ocean not large amounts of chum as you're perceiving. We are against the shark hunts off Waikiki and will take care of that issue next. You should do some "facts" research as a few of the shark tour supporters admitted to feeding the sharks. I heard it with my own ears that day of the protest. One came from Bernadette Billaber who told our group that "we won't feed them anymore" while sobbing. We don't need to take the tours to see/know how beautiful our ocean is. We have ancestral ties that can confirm this already. Do you?

People keep forgeting that the crabbers out of Haleiwa throw "chum" overboard at every trap they pick up. Thats who started changing the behavior in these sharks, not the tour operators. Tour operators are just taking advantage of an existing resource. Do the anti tour people want to ban the crabbers as well? What about the nightly shark hunts going on off Waikiki? Are they cool with that? How is it a bad thing to take people out, show them how beautiful the sharks are and educate them on the importance sharks play in the eco-system. The protesters were asked by the tour operators if they wanted to go out and see for themselves what really goes on during the tours. They refused. How is that for open-mindedness. They don't really care about facts.

Ms. Brendal needs to reclarify her statements as sharks have been in the ocean for more than "60 years". They WERE bottom feeding fish until the tours started feeding them. These tour companies know that without feeding the sharks, they would't have a business. Again, they can keep the tours as who wouldn't want to see our beautiful ocean, just don't feed the sharks. You don't see the Whale watch tours feeding the whales? You're not allowed to feed the turtles at Laniakea? So why are the sharks exempt? Bottom line, it's illegal therefore it must be stopped.

One can view sharks without feeding them and provoking agitated shark behaviors in order to amuse thier uneducated/unaccustomed tourists. Sport diver operators simply need to stop feeding sharks in order to manipulate their immediate behaviors. Its that simple. It's the law too. Restrictions and conventions prohibiting the sport feeding or agitation of wildlife are among the most basic tenants of wildlife care; laws against feeding turtles, dolphins and seals are enforced, why are shark laws dishonored and disrespected? Much respect, mahalo, Sean S.R. Van Sommeran Executive Director The Pelagic Shark Research Foundation Since 1990
