Shiny, slick and speedy - There's a new shuttle service assisting travelers at Honolulu International Airport.

"So, for all of you citizens and residents who have been trying to get a ride to and from the airport, don't want to pay that cab fee, don't want to bother your family members to get picked up at odd hours," said Lt. Governor Brian Schatz.

Now, as you exit baggage claim SpeediShuttle is there curbside if you need door-to-door service to your hotel, home or office.

Dressed in traditional Hawaiian attire and armed with tablet PC's, greeters can book a one-way or round trip fare on the spot, swipe your credit card and print out your receipt.

"Anybody who arrives at a mainland location, especially major cities, is accustomed to getting this kind of service," said Schatz.

Signage has been placed around the airport directing visitors to the multiple pick-up points. From there drivers can take you in one of 30 new 11-seater shuttles to and from various locations between Kahala and Ko'Olina.

Prices for roundtrip from HNL airport:

Waikiki $28.15

Downtown $56.28

Kahala $67.15

Ko'Olina $162.99

"If you live anywhere from Kahala, up the H-1 to Ko'Olina resort and above to the Mauka side of H-1, you'll be able to book your departures from your home to the airport," said Cecil Morton, SpeediShuttle President & CEO.

SpeediShuttle says when you compare the cost of a round-trip taxi fare to Waikiki, it's a better deal.

"As compared to $28 round trip per person or $56 (couple) - you can save about $30 taking SpeediShuttle," said Morton.

While there may be other shuttles seen at the airport, this is the only "official airport shuttle".

The shared-ride shuttles are also equipped with free wi-fi on board.

SpeediShuttle plans to expand its service to cover all of Oahu by January 1st.

Over 100 visitors to Honolulu International Airport booked rides with Speedishuttle Sunday.

Officials say Speedishuttle won a contract with the state to be the official shuttle for Honolulu airport.

Apparently Speedi Shuttle is banking on the fact that most people can't do the math. Another way to rip off the visitor. If a party of 4 takes a taxi to the Ilikai from the airport, the fare is about $30.00 one way. However the shuttle price for the same amount of people is over $60.00. What is the bargain on the shuttle.

IRONIC that many of the taxicabs had or have ABERCROMBIE bumper stickers during the election. NOW Abercrombie went to Tokyo meeting the Japan Association of Travel Agents, Japan Airlines and media who cover the travel industry... to participate in a parade in Okinawa as well as meet with the Okinawa prefecture government. Abercrombie is also meeting the National Governors Association in Beijing (2nd trip to there) before returning on Oct. 20. No forget that Lt Gov B.S. went to China too, GO to ltgov@hawaii.gov & read "Why China Matters ..." ALL THIS FOR APEC? Read more: http://www.kitv.com/news/29236380/detail.html#ixzz1bAFi7aqs

The objections here don't quite compute: the shuttle service will put taxis out of business and the owner is laughing all the way to the bank, despite the service being so bad and expensive that no customer will want to use it. Huh?

the only one happy is the OWNER of all these expensive shuttles; he's laughing all the way to the bank!

The taxis should never have been allowed in the first place: they put the horse buggies and rickshaws out of business.

Our taxi cab drivers will suffer. The government wants to take their income. Cab drivers pay taxes just like anyone else so the state is already making money off them. Pushing unwanted rail on all the people who will not be served (94%) is bad enough but taking jobs away from taxi drivers is worse. These people work for a living and the state may end up by adding past taxi drivers to the homeless list.

What's "official" about this? Isn't it a private company, buying special favors from the State? Aren't the taxi's already paying for exclusive access to passengers? And isn't it some sort of a van that waits till it is full before it moves, then hits a bunch of stops, making you wait to get to your destination? Won't you be all jammed in with a bunch of luggage and other people? And then they charge you $162 to Ko Olina??? For a ride in a van with a bunch of other people??? If they pack it with ten people, that's $1,629.90!!! You could split five cabs for a fraction of that, even round trip! What guarantee is there that they'll be there when YOU need to go back to the airport? Is this really a 24/7/52 service to and from all locations? Highly doubtful: No outrageous profit in that. And how is it that it costs twice as much from the airport to downtown as to Waikiki, when it is only half as far? And why doesn't it serve the majority of the island --Leeward, Windward, Central, North Shore, Ewa Beach, East Oahu? Military bases? They're just skimming the cream and ripping off the ignorant tourists. There will be trouble with this. How much did they contribute to the Dem's campaign funds? Was this an open-bid contract or a sweetheart deal? It stinks, whatever it is.

@yearite - I wouldn't call this fiasco an improvement ;o(. I would call it a typical State attempt at trying to do their job. It won't have any impact on APEC because practically none of those involved in the conference will be taking airport shuttles. Travel will be by private, secured vehicles and rental cars. The more the State tries to pretty itself up, the worse off we are. This is suppose to be an economic conference. If the State gives the impression that everything is always beautiful and like paradise here, the less help everyone will think we need. And moreso, it gives the false impression that the sleazeball politicians here are actually doing their jobs. It's all smoke and mirrors, after the conference is said and gone, it'll be back to "normal".

Prices for roundtrip from HNL airport: Waikiki $28.15 Downtown $56.28 Kahala $67.15 Ko'Olina $162.99 Wow!!! The State is really beginning to reach for ways to make up the budget fiasco! What local in their right mind would allow themselves to get bent over and screwed by those outrageous prices???? Olos73 is right, cabs charge their rates by travel time and destination, with additional fees for each person...but even with all of that it's still cheaper to catch a cab (unless its a single person). I'm sure there are family, friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, even acquaintances out there that are willing to sacrifice taking a little time out of their days/nights to drop off or pick someone up instead of allowing them to pay those laughable fees. Also, why does it cost more to be taken to Downtown vs. Waikiki? Isn't Downtown closer in distance??? Why does it cost more than double to be taken to Kahala vs. Waikiki??? It's only 5 miles more from Waikiki to Kahala!!! This is a stupid program..."the official shuttle", BFD!!! Destined to fail miserably.
