Students and teachers were evacuated from Waipahu Intermediate School today after several people complained of nausea and dizziness.Fire officials say they started receiving calls about a strong odor around 11:15 a.m. from homes on Pupumomi Street, then from Honowai Elementary School and Waipahu Intermediate School.
When fire and EMS officials arrived, everyone at Waipahu Intermediate had been evacuated.
EMS officials say five adults and two children were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
“We had several adults as well as students complaining about the inhalation of the gas but as far as what they felt I'm not sure what it was,” said Gary Fujii, Waipahu Intermediate School vice principal.
‘”We basically feel that this is described as a transient nuisance odor that it came and went and it did impact people,” said Capt. Terry Seelig.
Students and faculty members were allowed to return to class about an hour later.
Fire officials are still investigating what caused the odor.
School officials sent letters home explaining what happened.
