Maui native arrested in New Mexico for sex assault

SANTA CLARA, NM – On Monday, February 13, 2012 at approximately 12:30 pm MST, Deputy U.S. Marshals in New Mexico located and arrested 62 year-old Stanley James Pacheco, Sr on an Indian Reservation located in Santa Clara, New Mexico. Last October, the Maui native was charged via Indictment with eleven felonies to include six counts of Sexual Assault in the Third Degree, three counts of Sexual Assault in the First Degree and two counts of Attempted Sexual Assault in the First Degree. The female victim is a minor under the age of 14 years-old. 

Upon learning of the indictment and the issuance of the warrant, Pacheco fled the State. Maui Police Officials and the Maui Prosecuting Attorney’s Office requested the assistance of the U.S. Marshals in Honolulu at which time Deputy U.S. Marshals tracked Pacheco to Santa Clara Pueblo in Santa Clara, New Mexico. Chief of Santa Clara Police confirmed Pacheco was not an enrolled member of the Indian Tribe and not subject to extradition hearings in tribal court. Pacheco was booked into the Santa Fe County Detention Facility where he is being held on a $500,000.00 bail. Pacheco will remain in custody until an extradition hearing back to Maui County.

On November 22, 2011, Maui Police Officials also arrested Stanley Pacheco’s son Chad Kukona-Pacheco in Kahalui on similar charges. Kukona-Pacheco was indicted with eleven felonies to include six counts of Sexual Assault in the First Degree, and five counts of Sexual Assault in the Third Degree. Kukona-Pacheco also known as Kama is currently out on bond pending future court appearances.

The collaborative effort between the U.S. Marshals and the Maui Police Department involves the commitment to ensuring the safety of our communities and the welfare of children.
