A man died after participating in a swimming race Sunday morning at Kailua Beach.
The medical examiner identifies him as 47-year old, David Mackenzie of Kailua.
He was brought to shore by jet ski, where CPR was performed. Mackenzie was pronounced dead at the hospital.
His family says during the race he blacked out. The medical examiner says the cause of death is drowning.
His friends and family describe him as a humble, loving person who never hesitated to offer help to anyone.
"He was a very humble, caring, loving , generous person," said his hanai daughter Deva Correa. "He was very healthy and swam a lot. That was his passion."
Correa says he was like a father to her.
"My father wasn't able to be here and be a part of my wedding. He didn't have any daughters. He was my hanai dad and he was so proud to walk me down the aisle," Correa said trying to hold back tears.
"I love him so much for all he did, and my hanai mom. They have blessed our lives so much."
Mackenzie was active in his church, Calvary Chapel Windward.
He is survived by his wife, two sons and two grandchildren.
Memorial services are pending.
Mackenzie was in the Air Force and served on the U.S. Pacific Command.
