Biking and walking along the Ko'olau Loa coast to go to school, work, or visit family and friends will soon become easier and safer.

A 7,400-foot path linking L'ie and Kahuku is planned for the Ko'olau Loa region mauka (mountainside) of Kamehameha Highway in Malaekahana. The land is owned by Hawaii Reserves, Inc. (HRI). Pending permit approvals, the groundbreaking will be by summer's end.

The meandering path, nearly a mile and a half long, will be about 15 feet from the highway. It will run between the Kahawainui and Malaekahana bridges.

The 8-foot-wide path is a collaboration between HRI, the L'ie Community Association (LCA) and community residents. HRI will provide the land and materials; LCA, residents and local businesses will provide labor.

A bike path is good. But this cannot be a ruse public relations for Envision Laie in Malaekahana. http://ilind.net/2010/12/24/envision-laie-commentary-misses-the-bigger-picture/

This is great news for those of us who regularly run along the highway. Not only will it enhance the beauty of our rural country home but having a flat surface that's more than a mere 2-3 feet away from the rushing Kam Hwy traffic will be beneficial for the overall health of our community.

Of course a path to wallk & bike on sounds great! However we are very, very concerned that this is the start of a MASSIVE Development in Laie-Malaekahana, ENVISION LAIE that will change the area for ever. Is this path on Hawaiian Kuleana Lands ?? In Dec 7 Hawaiians were pepper-sprayed, hang-cuffed & arrested in this area. The elderly Wassons & even their 15yr old grand son!!! They say they were protecting their kuleana land ! What is happening at their trial ? The TV Networks need to cover this! Look into this MASSIVE Envision Laie Plan!! Who does it Benefit ? Local People are getting pushed out of Laie!!BYUH was changed focus & expanding to a BIG US-Asia School!Hundreds of new BYU Mainland Transfer students are pushing locals out of Affordable Housing in Kahuku, Laie, Hau'ula & Punalu'u!!! We need investigative journalism PLEASE!

To me, this is a great example of the community and private entities working together. I've already told my daughter once this path is good to go, she can ride her bike to school every day, and we won't have to pay for the bus! (She's not too happy about that, but maybe we can make it worth her while.)
