In the spirit of Christmas, layaway angels have been making the holidays brighter for families across the mainland and here in Hawaii as well.

Yesterday a man went to the Kmart store in Iwilei and paid off $3,800 dollars worth of layaway items.

In doing so he helped 17 strangers.

He did leave a dollar behind on the accounts for the people to pay on their own and told the manager to tell them to "go out and do something nice for a stranger."

"His inspiration basically I think he saw he said another family where that happened, where a family was having hardship and he saw the reaction from the girl and the father of what had happened," said Patricia Kroll, assistant manager at Kmart in Iwilei.

The folks at Kmart Iwilei say that man was the fourth layaway angel yesterday and they've actually had layaway angels coming in all week.

Nice gesture but a terrible idea!! "a man went to the Kmart store in Iwilei and paid off $3,800 dollars worth of layaway items. In doing so he helped 17 strangers". My neighbor's brother was one of those that had his layaway plan paid off. His annual salary is $78,000 per year. Once he had found out that someone paid off his layaway debt he felt so guilty that he donated $100 to the foodbank of Hawaii. And that's the point. It's better to help TRULY needy people than to "ASSUME" that someone with a Layaway plan is needy, you might be surprised that they make more money than you do...!!!
