LĪHU'E – The Kaua'i Police Department has issued an alert about fraudulent letters with checks enclosed, and are urging residents not to respond to this scam.
The letter sent from Montreal, Canada and signed by claims agent Paul Lucas asserts that the recipient is the beneficiary of an unclaimed settlement for the amount of $100,000.
The letter goes on to say that the receiver must pay a processing fee before the funds are released, and in order to cash the enclosed check, he/she must call Lucas for further instructions.
The deadline noted in the letter when the claim must be made is Thursday, March 8 or the claim will be forfeited.
“We urge the public to ignore this type of communication whether it’s an email message, letter or a telephone call,” said Acting Assistant Chief Sherwin Kaleo Perez with KPD’s Investigative Services Bureau.
“Although these scams vary as to how the money is solicited, their ultimate goal is the same. They want victims to send them money, and try to lure them with an attractive offer of thousands or millions of dollars in return.”
