Is five-years-old too young to play tackle football?  That's the question being raised after a five-year-old suffered a severe head injury at a tackle football game in early October.

Over 250,000 young football players participate in Pop Warner programs across the country.

Posted videos online show it is a full contact sport, with players as young as 5-years-old going head-to-head out on the field.

"Five might be a little young, I'm concerned about it," says Dr. Josh Green, Big Island Senator & Emergency Room Physician.

Dr. Josh Green has seen first hand the effects of sports-related traumatic brain injuries on young children.

"Up to age 14 now across the country there are 250,000 visits to the ER, to an ER doctor like myself, and 100,000 documented concussions," says Dr. Green.

Two weeks ago, a 5-year-old Oahu Pop Warner football player experienced a head injury that sent him to the hospital in critical condition where he went into a coma.

"I mean I'm a big time football fan, but there's time in the teen years and time in college for that kind of sport," says Dr. Green.

In 2006 Oahu Pop Warner began including the "Tiny-Mite" Division for kids ages 5, 6 and 7 with players competing against others of similar age and size to reduce the risk of injuries.

"Parents should be aware that football is designed to be a contact sport, it's built into the rules of the game," says Dr. Caesar Ursic, Director for Trauma Services at the Queens Medical Center.

Dr. Ursic also warns that a bump, blow or jolt to the head can do more than sideline a player for a season.

"Some of the problems would be learning deficits, kids may not do well in school."

"Do you really want your child to be exposed to that kind of risk when there are alternatives for sports," he says.

The Pop Warner program claims there are fewer injuries among children in organized football than in soccer.

"Every family should make their own decision, but again always have great equipment and great medical attention," says Dr. Green.

The Oahu Pop Warner program says they will not be commenting at this time.

Did he get hurt "In" the game. I've seen kids get hurt playing kickball or jumping rope and yes I've seen head trauma during a flag game while 2 kids were going for an opponents flag at the same time. Saw him a week later with some nice staples to show his (helmetless)effort. The reality is that everyone has a chance to get hurt doing anything like carpal tunnel from Xbox. The only choice here is to let the parents decide if they feel the risk is too great for a child, whether he be 5 or 15. Also great coaching helps alot. At Kaneohe the Mitey Mites have great coaches and I know at Kalani they have great coaches too. Unfortunately things happen and one can only pray everyone is safe. Prayers for Drew !!!!!

I think 5 years old is too young for ANY sport. Parents are ruining their childrens future by putting them into sports year round, so by the time they're in their teens, they're either plagued by a chronic injury, or they've blown out their arms from throwing "junk", OR they just burn out. The little ones have no idea how to tackle, or the mechanics of tackling, but that doesn't mean they can't get hurt... Not to change the subject, buy what really sickens me is the compeditivenes and lack of sportsmanship of a majority of parents. Watching a buch of 8 year old kids play ball is fun, until a parent gets involved and wants more play time for their kid, or starts harrassing the coaches because of course "they know how to coach better"... After coaching Little League Baseball for 11 years, I've seen it all, but it gets 10 times worse on a football field, regardless of the childrens age. I say wait until they get to the middle and high school levels, somewhere in their early teens. OH, and you parents who let your kids play the "older/lighter", don't do that, that is exactly how things like these kids being seriously injured happens.

5 years old is simply way to young. Kids at that age do NOT understand the fundamentals and dynamics of tackling, body control, angles and leverage. I coached for 11 years so I know. 12 years and under they should be playing Flag Football. Trust me, there's nothing "Girly" about a good-tough flag football game, I got a lot of bloody noses, skinned knees, and busted lips, but Never a concussion!!

I believe it is they are too young for them to play that type of contact sport. I can see at that age playing flag football, but not tackle. Isn't their heads still as vandable as when they are born? Any type of injury to their head will cause damage.

Too young. Why not play flag football or touch football with less physical contact? They learn the game and develope physically and mentally to be sportsmen or sportswoman and when older if body is fit and tougher then should they become more physical and play tackle. Big Boys game.
