This was the scene just moments after Officer Garret Davis' police car caught fire.

Police say officer davis pulled over to help a stalled vehicle on the H-1 freeway... when he was hit from behind by the driver of another car.

Drivers who saw what happened pulled over to help.

"As the fire was starting people were grabbing water bottles trying to put the fire out on the police officer's car but they couldn't get him out," says Charles Owens, witness.

Many who tried to help get Officer Davis out, ran away quickly after hearing gunshots.

"The fire was going rounds were going off from the police officer's car," says Owens.

Police say the accident happened around 8 o'clock saturday night in the left most lane of the H-1 freeway near the Kaonohi overpass...in the east bound direction.

"Before he had a chance to help the couple in the stalled vehicle, a Chevy silverado driven by a 41 year-old male struck the officers vehicle and pushed it into the stalled vehicle the officers vehicle then caught on fire shortly after the impact," says Honolulu Police Chief Louis Kealoha.

Police say the driver of the Chevy Silverado was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released for his injuries.

He was later arrested for negligent homicide.

It is unknown if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

The 32 year-old man and 22 year-old woman who were in the stalled car were transported to the hospital in guarded condition.

Police shutdown the H-1 freeway eastbound for about 4 hours while they investigated.

"I tell you it comes down to this people gotta slow down on the highways and they see the blue lights, just slow down and be very cautious," says Chief Kealoha.

Officer davis was originally from California.

He joined the HPD in July 2008 and was assigned to District 2 which includes Wahiawa, Mililani and the North Shore.

"Officer Davis was proud to be a Honolulu Police officer and enjoyed police work we are devastated by this loss and we send our prayers and condolences to his family," says Chief Kealoha.

Officer Garret Davis leaves behind a four year-old daughter and his mother in California.

Did the couple have a flat tire or were they stalled? In either case Im thinking did they not have enough sense to like roll their vehicle on to the right side of the freeway where it was safer? Your going at what 55 mph at least car dies out you have enough time while your car is slowing down to get to the other side. Why stop right there in the fast lane? If your tire went flat you have time to reduce your speed and get to the other side of the road. Why stop right there in the fast lane? As for the driver who hit the officers car how can you not see the blue lights. It was a long straightway road you did not go around no turns that you could not see the lights! You were either speeding or on your cell phone not paying attention! If you could not see the lights then maybe you should not be driving then. Were you suppose to be wearing glasses or something. All three people should get arrested for negligent homicide. This was just an unecessary accident that shouldnt have been. I look out my balcony every day and i see the marks on the road where it happened. I cant stop thinking of that officer and the way he died. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family!

As Officer Davis's baby girls Oma (grandma) this tragedy has been devestating. When I think of the senslessness of the split second act that took his life, it's overwhelming. His daughter at 3 years old (born just prior to his graduating the academy) will never know her dad. His Mom, sister, and other family will never see him get married, or grow into the person he strived to be. It saddens me to read some of these horrific posts by people who appear to only have their own well being at heart. The law will not prevent these types of accidents. However; as a main lander living in the bay area, I can tell you it does lessen them. I keep seeing posts regarding "common sense", it's not common sense that applies when your driving...it's "common courtesy" to your fellow drivers. No matter what color of lights are flashing, blue, red, yellow, or orange. Wherever they are located, on top of the car, in the window, on the rear or front. SLOW DOWN & MOVE OVER! Driving is a privilege, not a right. How many more families will have to move on after such a loss? When something as simple as moving over, could prevent so much.

@jusme101 ... where are you driving that you have had 'near misses' with HPD? i don't recall EVER having to swerve to avoid hitting an officer. maybe the problem is ... YOU?

for bsc54... it's a job... just like the military... it's job... most of us live, some of us die... it's when you see more than one village id_iot zipping around through traffic... and your in your vehicle and you swerve to miss them... then one dies... you can snivel or fix the problem. HPD always chooses to look the other way and snivel. Now watch some village id_iot pass more legislation to satisfy the snivelers, and nothing will change... we'll still be here dodging oncoming HPD.

This officer was my cousin. He was a great person all around. He loved doing what he was doing. He will be greatly misssed by many.
