The HGEA says it was a tough choice and a close vote but they're backing Mufi Hannemann for the democratic ticket for governor.
"You can only take one date to the prom, and we made a choice but it doesn't mean that the person we didn't choose is bad," said HGEA Executive Director Randy Perreira.
The head of the 43,000 member union called opponent Neil Abercrombie a big supporter of working people, but felt the past decades in Washington would mean a lagging understanding of issues facing local government.
Hannemann looks forward to the groundswell of support the biggest of the state and county worker unions can provide.
"They've always entered every race big-time and the governorship is a lot at stake here," said Hannemann
For Honolulu mayor HGEA is putting its weight behind Kirk Caldwell citing the many challenges ahead and the acting mayor's running start.
"Starting with sewers and not ending with waste disposal the other candidates for mayor are somewhat one dimensional whether it be rail or crime fighting," said Perreira.
HGEA chose Brian Schatz for lieutenant governor above the crowded field they interviewed for that job.
"Brian brings youth, certainly, but he also brings fresh ideas that all of us in government need," Perreira said.
The Hawaii republican party is questioning what's what's expected from both sides with such high profile endorsements.
"The only thing I promise is an open door, an open door to discuss every and all issues," Hannemann said.
The HGEA endorsement rounds out Hannemann's share of the public worker unions including police, fire, UPW and teamsters.
Neil Abercrombie is backed by the public school and university state employee unions.
