Its been a deadly year on Oahu roads.

So far 33 people have died, nine of them pedestrians crossing the street.

Honolulu police were out in full force this morning with the hope of saving lives.

In less than a week two people have died while crossing the street in Kalihi.

Now some are literally running for their lives to get to the other side of the road.

“Traffic safety is everyone's responsibility, not necessarily only on the driver but on the pedestrian or everyone who uses the roadway,” said Maj. Thomas Nitta.

In an effort to crack down on violators the Honolulu Police Department continues its campaign to SPAM, Save Pedestrians and Motorists.

Officers with HPD's traffic division were out in full force Wednesday morning looking for drivers who didn't stop for people in a crosswalk, weren't wearing seat belts and were distracted while driving and talking on the phone.

Just a block away from where a 57-year-old woman was hit and killed while in a marked cross walk this past Saturday.

“That was one of the factors that we considered but this is an ongoing project,” said Maj. Nitta.

The project started earlier this year with educational campaigns. Officers handed out more than 11,000 pamphlets with information and safety tips.

“At 25mph to the crosswalk its about 96 feet the distances we are using is approximately 180 feet we are giving them twice the stopping distance before we start crossing."

Even when our camera man with his video camera in tow tried to cross, cars didn't stop.

Police officers issued 61 citations, most of them for failure to stop and cell phone use.
