It has been a slow and gradual climb for the cost of a gallon of gas in Honolulu, across the state for that matter, as the numbers have inched noticeably higher.“What we are seeing currently is a gradual increase of one to two cents at a time versus a huge spike like we've seen in the past,” said Chris Olvera of AAA Hawaii.
And right now in Honolulu a regular gallon of gas averages $3.48 a gallon.
That's a nickel increase over a month ago.
Compared with a year ago it's more than a dollar more.
"With the world economy being a little bit more unstable last year we saw a huge spike in gas prices and the dollar per barrel went a lot higher than it has this year...Because the world economy is stabilizing we're seeing more of a stable increase when it does come to gas prices,” said Olvera.
But as summer quickly approaches it's not just the temperatures that we can expect to see rise.
"Typically in the summer time prices do increase, but we are not oil industry experts, and we can't predict exactly what the prices will be come the summer time,” said Olvera.
And once again, Hawaii lead the nation.
The only other states averaging more than three dollars a gallon -- Alaska and California.
Hilo residents are paying $3.47 a gallon for regular gas.
Lihue, Kauai residents pay $3.55 and in Kahului, Maui it’s $3.84 for a gallon of gas.
