As the peak of flu season approaches, there are many simple tips to stay flu-free.
Preventing infection could be as easy as smiling and eating colorful foods.
A quick trip to your local health food store could be one of the keys to preventing illness.
"They could slice the root and put it in water and heat the water and inhale the steam," said Dr. Tamar Hoffman with the University of Hawaii Medical School.
An internist, who practices holistic and alternative medicine, Dr. Hoffman is a valued instructor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine because she is a one-in-a-million survivor of a rare tumor.
"And the studies showing that tumeric prevents cancer," said Dr. Hoffman.
And you'd be surprised to know that lots of pesticide-free fruits and vegetables can help fend off the flu.
"The colorful vegetables and fruits have antioxidants and they are immune boosters and again help us fight viruses," said Dr. Hoffman.
And researchers say three mushrooms have been proven to improve the immune system: Reishi, maitake and shiitake.
"So you could eat it as food if you get it, if you don't get it you can get it in a capsule," said Dr. Hoffman.
Other ways to help fight off viruses include drinking water, getting plenty of rest and even being happy.
"If our immune system is low or we are depressed and our immune system is low, then infection wins over," said Dr. Hoffman.
She calls it the mind-body connection. In addition, specific herbs have been shown to help boost the immune system and maintain good health if taken properly.
"We know things like vitamin C and zinc are helpful to our immune system, at least there are a lot of studies showing that and more recently vitamin D," said Down to Earth Wellness Manager Carmela Wolf.
And key herbs taken as soon as you start to feel sick could give you that kick.
"Combination of yin chao and gao mao ling oh I am getting a sore throat, getting a little feverish, getting a little cough. And the sooner you take them the better," said Wolf.
Investing a little time in yourself, your happiness and your body can go a long way toward preventing the flu.
