A two-year investigation led to the arrests of 14 people on the Big Island in connection with an alleged marijuana growing and distribution network.

The leader of the group has openly said cannabis is a religion for him and that he's proud to spread what he calls the sacrament. How he did it, though, appears to have run afoul of federal authorities.

Roger Christie of Hilo speaks openly about what he calls his religion -- his THC ministry, and of the wealth that has flowed from it.

"The nickname for it is ganja-nomics,” he says on web videos he made promoting his services, “the natural economy that happens when you have freedom and cannabis together."

He claims a state license to be a wedding minister is his license to provide the drug. For donations of varying amounts The Hawaii Cannabis Ministry based issues a “Religious Use of Marijuana” ID card, ordainment, legal defense kits, and what the founder calls the sacrament -- marijuana

"We use cannabis religiously, and you can too," Christie says. “Raise the level of acceptance for having the blessings of cannabis in our life. I know you want it. I wanted it, I was hungry for it. I got it."

Thursday he got arrested, along with more than a dozen others, picked up in various locations from Hilo to Honokaa. Drug enforcement agents, sheriffs, county police, immigrations and customs and even postal agents were part of the bust. Sources say 14 people in all were taken into custody.

“They were only after people that they had federal indictments for,” said Nathan Clark, who lives in the THC Ministry building called The Moses Building. “They left all my things alone. They told me I was free to go."

Clark said he is from Iowa and has been out of jail himself since May 11th.

“The DEA, it’s one of their last hurrahs in their failed drug war, the war against cannabis,” Clark said.

The suspects were put on a Coast guard c-130 plane bound for Oahu. Authorities declined to comment.

In the past associates of Christie have been arrested as far away as the East Coast. At the time of a high-profile raid in Florida 2 years ago, Christie told KHON2 his religion is a defense against prosecution.

"Everyone in the USA is born into the right to cultivate and to use cannabis," he said. “Every state in the United States guarantees religious freedom for each of their citizens, and the federal government does, too.”

Christie openly guided his followers about a Hawaii County law directing low-priority for low-quantity marijuana busts.

"There is no more budget for the county police or prosecutors to go after people who are in the misdemeanor amount of cannabis,” Christie claims, “and that's the 24 plants and 24 ounces.”

And to feed what Christie told KHON2 was a demand that exceeded supply, he developed a system where ministry members could grow pot at home, make a donation of cannabis to the ministry and get a monetary donation in return. Though 14 are now in custody, the ministry boasts more than 60,000 members.

"May your garden grow green and plenty,” Christie says. “We'll see you at harvest time."

The U.S. Attorney's office told KHON2 it plans a press conference about the bust tomorrow.

I was in minister classes for three years with Roger Christie. Hes a good man and a good minister. He went out on his own as a minister when he came to believe that cannibis is a conduit for the true spiritual experience and he believes that should be available to anyone who wants it. The religious use of peyote was legally allowed many years ago for the same reason. this will be a good test case. While I dont use cannabis except for hemp fabric as a seamstress and clothing designer, I support Roger for fighting for what he believes in. I can vouch that Rogers motive is not monerary. He has scratched by for years by the grace of God, and as practically anyone who knows him will agree, Roger is one of the most helpful, generous people Ive ever known.

Well it's sickening to see such a waste of tax payer monies to pursue the alleged "drug" Cannabis. Was there a real "distribution network" or is this more of the same BS? A few folks helping grow and provide Cannabis medicine to those in Spiritual or Physical need. A "Drug Bust" as the headline says. Really? Here's the deal. The US Govt. has the "Patent" on Cannabis. Really? Why? Could it be because of the efficacy of the Medicine God put on this planet for all his children to partake of? Dr. Melamede is the clear authority on this see Youtube. Cannabinoid Receptors in our brains, research project after project verifying the medicinal value of this wonderful plant. But there is one problem for the Government and the "Machine" and that is anyone with a seed and soil can grow there own. It's hard to "monetize" a plant that for 10,000 years has grown like a weed. They tried with the Marinol Pharma approach and still it did not provide the type of results available to one using the natural plant material. So, will a Federal Judge acknowlege the Constitutional Rights of Cannabis Sacrament users versus an Indian using Peyote? In due time, the people will dictate that fair access and distribution of this Kanen Bosem, the component of the Holy Anointing Oil. And during the interim, the uphill battle for legalization will be waged from West Coast to East. California will pass the first law as usual and their residents will continue to enjoy the freedom that most other state residents desire. I lift up Rev. Christie and all other sincere practioners of the THC Ministry and hope the media does the right thing and stop demonizing the "Green Herb" written of one page one of your Bibles. It is time to end the ignorance and vilification of the True Sacrament. Wine and bread wafers were not what God intended in my view. Here in Florida as well as many other states we have MMJ legislation pending, bottom line is it is you God given right and your Constitutional t

You guys are funny. While I support the use of medical marijuana, and hope that you guys will prevail through the justice system with the claim of the use of marijuana as part of your religion, I think you these "leaders" are screwed... A judge isn't going to listen to consitutional ramblings, fed to you by your leaders, he's going to say "the law is what the law is, 2 years prison"... Good luck with that one guys!

The christian right leads the way in keeping marijuana illegal because they're afraid that if more people smoked marijuana they would come to their senses and realize that there really is no god and it was just all a big hoax...

The RFRA (Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993) allows Native American Church members to eat peyote, which functions like LSD. Americans shouldn’t need a specific church membership or an act of Congress to obtain their birthright freedom of religion. God’s children’s free exercise of religious liberty may include entheogen sacraments to mediate communion with Him. Freedom of speech presupposes freedom of thought. The Constitution doesn’t enumerate any governmental power to embargo diverse states of mind. How and when did government usurp this power to coerce conformity? The Mayflower sailed to escape coerced conformity. Legislators who would limit cognitive liberty lack jurisdiction. Common-law holds that adults are the legal owners of their own bodies. The Founding Fathers undersigned that the right to the pursuit of happiness is inalienable. Socrates said to know your self. Mortal lawmakers should not presume to thwart the intelligent design that molecular keys unlock spiritual doors. Persons who appreciate their own free choice of path in life should tolerate seekers’ self-exploration. Liberty is prerequisite for tracking drug-use intentions and outcomes.
