More than 22 million Americans struggle with addiction.
"Teachers are taking it and doctors are taking it and professionals who you just would never have ever thought in a million years could ever get hooked on anything so terrible are really being drugged down by this disease," says Beth Chapman.
Tuesday night's meeting will feature a panel of experts on addiction, including the chapmans and Jeff Van Vonderen of A&E's Emmy-nominated "Intervention." "It's the only addictive substance you can actually make at home. It's the most quickly most severely addicting substance that there is," says Jeff Van Vonderen, Intervention Expert.
Local experts will also be on hand.
"We treat 2000 adults a year and 700 adolescents and for adults by far ice is the number one drug of choice," says Alan Johnson, Hina Mauka, CEO."We're also seeing the tragedies now of second and third generational users out there," says Johnson."Abraham Lincoln said you cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. We give those strong kids tools to go forward and be big leaders and make a difference in their community," says Delores Gregoire, Winners Camp.
The recovery project hopes to raise awareness that addiction is a treatable disease and recovery is possible.
"There's a difference between recovery and sobriety. If we want people sober just kidnap them and lock them up until half life of drug goes away and the you let them go nothing is solved," says Van Vonderen.
"I just encourage anybody who has an addict in their family or knows of someone who is using drugs or alcohol and has become excessive with those things to please joins us here tomorrow night," says Beth Chapman.
"Let's treat this like it was the bubonic plague," says Duane "Dog" Chapman.
"It's not like pot it's not like the other drugs -- this is a killer," says Duane Chapman.
This is not a "fan" event so no photos or videos will be allowed. The meeting starts at 6:30 at Word of Life on Queen street. It is free and open to the first 1600 adults.
