It's a nationwide trend: talking, texting, e-mailing all from the palm of your hand. Easy access at your fingertips - and to someone you may not even know.
"It's possible for someone to get their hands on if they know what they're doing," says Robert Kogami. from SuperGeeks
Kogami specializes in virus removal from computers. But says those mini hard-drives in our hand can also be tapped by spy wear.
"It can come from computers from another persons cell phone, text messages can contain mal ware."
Even your blue-tooth can act as a wireless transmitter to download viruses. E-mails, contacts, personal pictures could all be hacked.
"Computers meant to make life easier now people use computers against people," he says.
Newer phones he says would be the most accessible.
"I'm pretty sure more of the "smart phones" will be hacked eventually."
Hacking into cell phones is illegal without a warrant. The FBI says there are cases on the mainland where cell phones have been breeched. No such cases yet in Hawaii.
But Kogami says the spy wear can be loaded onto your phone and you may have no idea it's there.
There are even programs that would let someone else listen to a phone's mic...without the phone being turned on
"Technology is advancing everyday, so it's possible for someone to do something that wasn't possible yesterday, today," says Kogami.
There are tips to keep your security safe: turn off your blue tooth access when not in use, if your phone has a password access - use it. And don't accept unknown e-mails or text-messages, it could open your cell phone up to a spy.
