The Rainbow Warrior basketball program is now searching for a new head coach after U.H. announced this morning that the school will not retain Bob Nash.

Nash is a hoops icon who has dedicated most of his adult life to the University of Hawaii as a star player, a longtime assistant, and head coach, which is why athletics director Jim Donovan says this decision, which comes two days after the season ended, was such a difficult one.

Nash was hired as head coach three years ago, after serving as an associate coach under Riley Wallace for 20-years.

Over the last three seasons, Nash accumulated a 34-and-56 record....going 10-and-20 this past year, and finishing in last place of the WAC, failing to qualify for the conference tournament.

He had one year remaining on his current contract...estimated to be around $240,000 annually, which requires a buyout.

Donovan says that buyout is being underwritten, at least in part, by outside donors.

Nash has not yet commented on the firing.

Donovan meanwhile, says the search for a replacement will begin immediately and he hopes to fill the position within three weeks.

UH could develope an excellent program with the right Coach. Why is St. Mary's tough for example they are normally weaker than UH. The warriors need a real fighters who won't back down and creats that in his men. Sure recruiting is a very important aspect and the Islands are very hungry for a competetive team so all the ingredients are there it's just a matter of being more agressive in finding a carismatic coach who can recruit talent to the Islands. Then UH can finally kick some butt. I remember the Fab 5 which included Nash and at one point in the season they were in the top 20? They made the NCAA Tourney although losing in the first round to Weber State. The team had balance and shared the ball, there was chemisty and a common mission. Aloha Duane in Rome Italy

I believe UH should let Mr. Bos Nash finish out his contract. What is it going to be that amazinly of a basketball team that they will become #1 without Coach Bob Nash. It's terrible that the university is going to do this. Why not let coach finish out his 1 year. I'm dissappointed I myself am a alumni varsity basketball player from molokai too.

Actually Bob Nash was doing us in Hawaii a favor when he signed up to work for only $240,000.00. The Football Coach gets $1,100,000.00 in comparison which is over 4 times as much as Nash. He did good for what was given to him...they even hired him late in the season so he couldn't recruit in time...so don't put all the blame on him. We messed up too by dragging our feet in hiring him.

It is sad, but he was too nice a guy. We did not expect him to be a loud wind bag like Riley Wallace was, but we also didn't expect a passive soft spoken one either. Good luck Bob Nash, in what ever you do.
