The man accused of trying to sexually assault a woman near Punahou School made his initial court appearance Friday morning.

But those proceedings were postponed.

Ferdinand Bermejo is accused of sex assault and kidnapping.

He stood before a judge, but apparently cannot hear the charges being read against him because he is deaf.

So his initial appearance was postponed until Monday when a sign language interpreter can be brought in.

The apparently random attack happened near a church just off Punahou Street early Wednesday morning.

Bermejo reportedly followed the woman for several blocks before he dragged her and pinned her to the ground.

"I kind of think he was on something because he was going through a lot of pain, and it didn't seem like, nothing was registering for him,” said witness and good samaritan Danny Garbe.

The alleged victim has these men to be thankful for...Danny Garbe and Josh Riley, along with roommate Noel Krasomil who sprung into action when they heard her screams for help.

"I mean I really didn't think about it. It's definitely a dangerous situation to just go running into, but it happened so fast. By the time we heard the screaming to when we were over there was maybe 10 to 20 seconds,” said Josh Riley.

According to court documents Bermejo was prone on top of her, physically overpowering her and held her to the ground.

In that same document the witnesses say Bermejo was trying to remove her clothes.

Fortunately for the victim, three good samaritans stepped in.

"We didn't even think about it. When you hear that kind of somebody screaming like that I think most people would try to help out if you can. We just happened to be there,” said Garbe.

One of those good samaritans, Josh Riley is a new father which makes him reflect on what happened.

"I really hope when she's older if something like that happened somebody would have the courage to step up and at least get him away. It's really scary to think about as a new father,” said Riley.

Bermejo is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

He is expected back in court on Monday.

"Attacker claims to be Deaf"...?? Uh, I think you got more problems and issues than just being Deaf. I know a lot of people that are hearing impaired (US Veterans), they don't go around sexually assaulting people.!

The attacker was in a courtroom, thanks to Josh Riley. I wonder how many others he attacked and got away with? How many in the future would he have attacked had it not been for J. Riley, with help from Danny & Noel? Thank you guys for stepping up to the plate. I really have the deepest and highest respect for you.

My fiancee and I walk past that church all the time. It's scary to think something terrible like that would occur so close to home. Thank you, gentlemen.
