Next week Friday, a small island will appear on the horizon off Waikiki.
It's the brainchild of Robert Maynard, who is sinking $7,000,000 of his own money into making that island a family playground at sea.
His company is called Kandoo - and a 98 ton steel catamaran that will be moored 200 yards off Waikiki will be called Kandoo Island.
Maynard is enthusiastic about what he calls a one of a kind recreational facility.
"Omigosh, it's going to be Disneyland for the families in the middle of the day, it's going to have snorkeling, scuba diving, scuba-bobs, sailing lessons, jet skis, para-sailing - I mean, anything you imagine on the water, we're going to do" says Maynard.
Many are wondering how Maynard can start this venture when tourism is suffering right now. He calls it the perfect storm of opportunity.
"We think that the United States is going to become much more affordable for overseas travelers. We also think that because of that, Americans are going to want to stay home and where do they want to go? They definitely want to come to Waikiki."
The other advantage of Kandoo Island - very little downtime.
"In the evening, as the sun starts to go down, it will be a little more romantic place, live music and then at night turns into a rocking night club."
Maynard says the opening of Kandoo Island comes at a time when qualified people are looking for work.
"We're hiring 250 people right now. We're a 24-7 operation. We need mechanics, we need food servers, we need captains, we need rescue divers, lifeguards, and staff people, marketing, I need a web designer really bad.">
And there's more good news for locals.
"We have free access to the island for kama'aina plus 25 percent discount on all activities because we really want to see kama'aina come out and maybe do things that they've never been able to do before."
There will be a brief shakedown of the island at the end of the month - a blessing July first - initial customers the second and a grand opening, you guessed it, 4th of July.
"It's very unique and I think we'll surprise a lot of people and make a lot of people pretty happy here", says Eddie Anderson, Kandoo King of Customer Delight.
