North Shore Community Land Trust and Residents Swap Ideas on Pupukea-Paumalu Land Development

A dog park, activities center, and hiking trails are among the ideas proposed for a large parcel of land on Oahu's North Shore.

In 2007 the community rallied to protect and transfer the Pupukea-Paumalu property into public ownership.

Now the North Shore community land trust is gathering ideas from residents on how the land should be developed.

They hope to present a draft management plan to the city and state by early next year.


Waianae Brushfire

Homeowners in Waianae were on their toes Saturday - monitoring a brushfire that broke out just before 1:00 pm on the mountainside above Kapaekahi street.

Firefighters battled the blaze as people watered down their roofs in case the fire crept closer.

The 3-acre blaze was extinguished about an hour later.

No homes were damaged.

Teachers Find Ways to Make Up Lost Classroom Time

Teachers are taking back their classrooms...finding alternative ways to make-up lost classroom time due to furlough Fridays.

A group of elementary, middle and highschool teachers met saturday to share ideas on how to cover core subjects when their students are away from the classroom.

One idea is to give students take-home packets during furlough weeks.

Others are adjusting their classroom schedules to fit in more instructional time.

A hearing is scheduled in federal court monday to discuss public school furloughs.


Saint Damien Celebratory Mass on Kalaupapa

The celebration continues for the newly-canonized Saint Damien.

Saturday morning, nearly 300 people gathered for a special celebratory mass in Kalawao on the Kalaupapa peninsula.

The ceremony was followed by a festive luau with hula performances and Hawaiian music.
