------- ------ ------- Frank De Lima, Glenn Medeiros headline Portuguese ‘Festa’ entertainment lineup this weekend. The 29th “Festa,” a annual festival celebrating Portuguese heritage in Hawaii, on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22 and 23, 2007, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at McCoy Pavilion. General admission is $3 or free for active-duty military personnel and children 10 and younger. The two-day entertainment schedule follows: Saturday, Sept. 22 10 a.m. — Opening remarks and blessing Lt. Governor James R. “Duke” Aiona Jr. Evelyn Starkey, HCPH president Herbert Carlos, HCPH member and cultural historian 10:30 a.m. — Ukulele performance by Gordon Marks 11:15 a.m. — Vocals by Sandy Oliveira Noon — Comedy by Frank De Lima (Note: Rescheduled from 3 p.m. Saturday) 12:45 p.m. — Variety song and dance by The Cabaret Dancers 1:50 p.m. — Filipino dancing by Filipiniana Dance Company 2:40 p.m. — Brazilian martial arts by Capoeira Hawaii 3:30 p.m. — Flamenco dancing by Flamenco Hawaii Sunday, Sept. 23 10 a.m. — Slack key guitar music by Danny Carvalho 10:50 a.m. — Portuguese dancing by the Maui Portuguese Cultural Club 11:40 a.m. — Vocal and harpsichord performance by Bobby Asing 12:30 p.m. — Portuguese dancing by the Maui Portuguese Cultural Club (repeat performance) 1:20 p.m. — Portuguese singing by the Portuguese Chorale 3 p.m. — Comedy by Frank De Lima 4 p.m. — Vocal and guitar performance by Glenn Medeiros Festa will also offer some of Hawaii’s favorite Portuguese fare for sale, including Portuguese bean soup, Portuguese sausage (linguica) hot dogs, Portuguese sweet bread (pao doce), code fish stew (bacalhau), vinha d’alhos sandwiches, and, of course, lots of malassadas! There will even be a Portuguese-style “mixed plate” courtesy of Kailua’s Agnes’ Portuguese Bake Shop. In addition, the festival will feature craftwork imported from Portugal, local artists and vendors, cooking demonstrations, cultural displays, and a multi-ethnic genealogy research center organized by the Portuguese Genealogy Society of Hawaii. Chartered in 1977 for the purpose of preserving and perpetuating the heritage and culture of the Portuguese in Hawaii, the Hawaii Council on Portuguese Heritage is an umbrella organization for a dozen different organizations statewide. Portuguese civic, cultural and business groups throughout the state of Hawaii are each represented by a delegate who serves on the council’s board of directors. Revenue generated at the Festa event helps to support the many programs and activities coordinated by the council and its member organizations, such as genealogy workshops, dance classes, cooking shows, language instruction and more.
