Ala Moana stores announced for new wing

By Tannya Joaquin

You can't miss the work underway on Hawaii's first Nordstrom store. Now, we're learning what other stores plan to open in the new expansion at Ala Moana center next year.

If you build it, they'll come. For General Growth Properties, the 2 year Nordstrom expansion is proving that theory.

“It'll be a two level concourse that'll connect the existing center to the Nordstrom store,” said Jasmine Tso, from the Ala Moana Marketing Department.

Stores are lining up for leases at Ala Moana Center, to join this new wing that will be anchored by the Department Store. By next spring, this will be home to thirty new stores.

There are new clothing Stores here for the first time such as J. Crew and Chico's. Home Furnishing Store, Design Within Reach, Mineral Makeup Line Bare Escentuals, and Health store Blue Hawaii Lifestyle featuring goods made in Hawaii. Four retailers will relocate to the new wing- Ann Taylor, White House/Black Market, Williams Sonoma, and Max and Co. Four other stores will go in along the Nordstrom Kapiolani Boulevard Store front.

“When everything is all said and done, Ala Moana will consist of 290 stores, 70 restaurants, and 10 thousand parking stalls,” said Tso.

Next to Nordstrom, work is underway on a new parking garage adding 8-hundred spaces. This expansion makes the world's largest outdoor mall even larger, increasing its size to 2.1 million square feet. And, there's still space for others. General Growth Properties is in discussion with other retailers, but not quite ready to spill the beans.

“We're just excited to offer our local residents new and exciting concepts, many of which are first in Hawaii,” said Tso.

Ala Moana center expects to announce more stores in the next few weeks. The grand opening for the new Nordstrom wing is March 7th, 2008.
