A New Children's Book explains Alzheimer's

By Kirk Matthews

Families are learning to live with a relative who has Alzheimer's. But how do those families help younger children understand what their aging relative is going through? An author hopes his new book helps.

At this adult day care center in Palolo, half the senior citizens have Alzheimer's or dementia. And they have families.

"There is a person there. And so I thought we really need a book to help children, the next generation perhaps change their attitude towards the aging," said Frances Kakugawa, the author.

In her book, "Wordsworth Dances the Waltz," Wordsworth the mouse poet notices a change in Grandma - and in the family. But through his poetry, Wordsworth manages to change the family's attitude, from one of hushed whispers and secrets to acceptance of life's inevitabilities.

"The bottom line with all these changes would be we can still remain kind, loving human beings no matter what the changes bring," said Kakugawa.

Glenn and Allyson Furukawa run this adult day care center. He says families could benefit greatly from reading the book.

"I think that anything that can be done as far as awareness, increasing awareness and education for our families and our communities ultimately results in just better care for those with Alzheimers," said Glenn Furukawa, the Adult Day Center operator.

In fact, during our visit, Glenn and Frances formed a mutual admiration society.

"And so this, again, grandparents we honor you on this day. If I wake up in the morning, if I've been able to accomplish that then I've had a good day." "Terrific." "Thank you," said Furukawa.

The former school teacher turned author believes the book will help even young children understand the changes grandma or grandpa are going through. In fact, she quotes a six year old's observation on just that.

"You know, Grandma, all those wrinkles on grandpa's face - they're memory lines. And grandpa is going to take a long time to die because he has to get rid of all those memories first," said Kakugawa.
