Homeless kids excited about new home

By Marisa Yamane

A family, who has lived on the beach for 15 years, is about to have a dream come true.

The family of thirteen will soon have a roof over their heads through the help of a non-profit organization.

"Hi, I'm Rose. I'm going to be moving in the house. Thank you."

This Waianae house is still several months from being completed.

"If the kids were here they'd tell you we'd like to move into the house right now. Ha ha," said
future resident Kaulana Kaneakua.

The Kaneakua ohana, which now includes 10 kids and three adults, has been living on the beach for the the past 15 years.

"We've waited for this a very long time," said future resident Rose Kaneakua.

They won't have to wait much longer through the help of Habitat for Humanity.

"I think it's especially special for us because it's the first time literally we're helping families living on the beach," said Sharon Moran, Habitat for Humanity Leeward Oahu.

"Welcome home. Welcome home. Kaulana. Thank you very much for coming out and helping us out."

Rose Kaneakua inherited the land but she and her husband could never afford to build a house, until now.

Total cost for materials, electrical and plumbing work -- about $97,000, which the Kaneakua's will pay back to Habitat for Humanity over 20 years, at zero percent interest.

"The kids have already picked out their bedroom, they've all taken the big ones," said Rose Kaneakua.

Since February, an estimated 500 volunteers have helped to build this house, which is scheduled to be completed in October.

"The way we see it, it's going to get better from here," said Rose Kaneakua.
