Habitat for Humanity builds at Ala Moana Center

By Manolo Morales

After a ceremonial nail pounding by yours truly, volunteers got moving. The goal was to build a two-bedroom frame by the end of the day right in the parking lot of Ala Moana Center.

In case you haven't noticed, these are not professional construction workers.

"We have a lot of vice-presidents out here who, yes, are used to making big decisions behind a desk. But they're all out here to support Habitat For Humanity," says volunteer Jasmine Tso.

They are management level workers for General Growth Properties, which operates Ala Moana Center and several malls nationwide. Habitat for Humanity, which builds homes for low income families, provided the much needed guidance to the white collar volunteers.

Volunteer Dona Farrell says, "my only experience is maybe nailing a nail on the wall to support a frame or picture so this has been a new experience for me."

"You know white collar is a little different. But in this case, it's physical work, we're sweating together, so it's a lot of bonding so it's all good," says volunteer Dwight Yoshimura.

All that sweating and bonding can add up to a lot.

They started at 6:30 this morning and worked until about four. The house will be on display at the mall through Memorial Day, and will then be moved to Leeward Oahu, where three more bedrooms will be added on.

When it's done, a family of seven will move in not for free, but at a bargain price.

Kathi Hasegawa of Habitat for Humanity says "the family has a zero percent interest mortgage over a 20-year period. So they're still only paying around 400-dollars a month for that five-bedroom home."

The family is screened and must also put in at least 500 hours of what's called sweat equity. That's time building their own home and also for other applicants.

Habitat for Humanity plans to build another 200 homes in Hawaii within five years.
