Rally helping elementary students with challenges

By Tannya Joaquin

Thousands of Hawaii students learned today about the challenges of jumping from elementary to intermediate and middle schools.

”Good Morning students. My name is Miss Shimoboko.”

That's Frank DeLima, playing teacher for 35-hundred 5th and 6th graders from around the Island.

“Will you be my friend?

DeLima uses laughter to ease students' fears about moving on up to intermediate school.

“I'm a little bit nervous.”

“Any fears about starting a new school? Probably who I'm going to be sitting with at Lunch, who I'm going to be sitting at Lunch,” said one student, Jasmine Idica.

This Transition Convention has been held by Adult Friends for Youth for the past 16 years.

“This is a time of life where enormous changes are taking place. Changing physically, emotionally as they go from childhood into adolescence. It's a confusing time,” said Sid Rose with Adult Friends for Youth.

Hawaii American Idol Alum Jordan Segundo is the spokesperson for the Group, and uses his fame to inspire the audience.

“I think being a contestant being on the show was a big accomplishment..”

“I think sharing the story on my journey inspires them to follow their dreams and do whatever it is they're passionate about.”

“There are going to be different pressures, but have fun. Take advantage of all of the opportunities they have at the school.”

Who knows? If you're lucky maybe one day a comedian will spoof you, right Tita Joaquin?

“I'm a popular newscaster and it all started because Middle School was just an awesome experience for me,” said DeLima.
