Native Hawaiians Protest Turtle Bay Development

By Marisa Yamane

A major project on Oahu's North Shore has many native Hawaiians upset.

They say their ancestors are buried where developers plan to build thousands of hotel and condominium units.

We've heard about people protesting the Turtle Bay development because they want to keep the area "country."

Today's protest along Kuilima Drive was more about the cultural impact.

A march in honor of their Hawaiian ancestors.

"Respect the bones of our ancestors, so we're protesting against that today.
That's what this march is for," said protestor Monique Martinez.

And a march to stop development.

"Keep country country!"

For months, North Shore community activists have protested against Turtle Bay Resort's plan to build 3,500 new hotel and condominium units.

"We all need recreation area and need to protect our resources, mostly for the next generation," said protestor Jeannie Martinson.

"Aole, aole, aole."

Now the issue has gotten personal for many native Hawaiians.

"The iwi are on sand dunes at every single one of those proposed developments. There have been found iwi," said protest organizer Vicky Holt Takamine.

Iwi -- or ancient Hawaiian bones.

"We would never consider putting a resort on Punchbowl. Because they're marked cemeteries. These are our cemeteries. It is a traditional practice not to reveal the burial places of our kupuna," said Takamine.

Today's march was also in support of a Senate bill now moving through the House.

It requires a new historic and cultural assessment, and a minimum shoreline setback of 750 feet for any development on Oahu's north shore.

"We looking at preservation really, that's the bottom line, preservation," said protestor Kealakahi.

Kuilima Resort Company's project manager released a statement this afternoon.

Ralph Makaiau says they care deeply about culturally sensitive areas on their property.

And if they find burial sites during construction, they plan to consult with a team of experts on what to do.
