Push for Votes on Election Rail Question

By Brianne Randle

It's less than a month until the General Election. Besides the choice for President or even Mayor - Honolulu voters have a choice that will shape the island's future. The choice is whether they want a steel on steel rail system.

The voters will decide November fourth. Steel on steel rail - yes or no!

"I say vote yes now for rail," says Maeda Timson, rail supporter.

"vVote no, absolutely vote no," says Cliff Slater, HOT lanes supporter.

A split decision. The "Vote Yes 4 Rail Now coalition says a "no" vote is a forever vote.

"Rail is the better choice and if it's killed again it will not be talked about for many many decades. It's foolish to make the same mistake twice," says Kirk Caldwell, rail supporter.

Supporters are screaming for rail to pass.

"This project needs to happen," says Caldwell."

"Stop Rail Now" is taking a more laid-back approach. Driving voters towards a "no" vote. Taking a tour of the proposed rail route.

"I wanted to see for myself where the route was going and just how much room it's going to take up," says Mike Simpson, Honolullu resident.

A twenty mile stretch with twenty transit stations.

"These stations are huge," says Slater.

The rail running about the height of a telephone pole.

"The wooden ones look like forty feet to me," says Slater.

"Stop Rail Now" says they have a better - shorter option: highway HOT lanes.

"The only way you're gonna relieve traffic congestion is with more highway space," says Slater.

Rail supporters disagree.

"You want to see traffic congestion, I'll give you traffic congestion the next fifty years if we continue to support something like toll roads," says Alicia Maluafiti, rail supporter.

"But most of all we can't afford it," says Timson

Rail opponents say when it comes to cost....

"To spend this kind of money on a rail line is just plain crazy," says Slater.

Others say it would be crazy not to.

"There is nothing on the horizon for this county or this state for jobs stimulation other than this rail project," says Caldwell.

On the November ballot Election Officials say blank votes on the rail question will *not* be counted as "no" votes.
