Police Officer Stabbed in Torso Takes the Stand

By Brianne Randle

Honolulu Police Officer John Otto took the stand in District court, called to testify what happened the night of October first. When he was called to check the park near Waikiki Aquarium for a convicted felon wanted on outstanding warrants.

"Located a male matching the description given," said Otto.

He claims he then approached the suspect asking for his name.

"Upon giving us the name of David Kapaa we ran checks through dispatch, which revealed no record whatsoever," said Otto. "We became suspicious being that he matched the description."

The description of 27 year old Kawika AhQuin.

"A few seconds after that he took off running."

That's when Otto says a chase ensued. And moments later he caught up to AhQuin.

"As soon as I grabbed him he looked over his right shoulder and simultaneously swung his hand back, hitting me in the lower abdomen area," said Otto.

AhQuin's younger brother was in the park at the time. And claims his brother was carrying a knife. But says he never saw him swing it at an officer.

"Did have a fishing knife but the way the fishing knife was and how I know he couldn't reach it....," says Kamuela AhQuin. "You would literally have to twist it around take off the straps to pull the knife out."

Otto testified that only after apprehending AhQuin did he realize there was a knife. And that he had been stabbed.

"I noticed a large knife, black handle and silver blade," said Otto. "Something didn't feel right so I began to remove my uniform to check."

"Upon removing my trousers and pulling it open, I noticed I was bleeding."

AhQuin's brother says his brother is innocent.

"When I saw the blade dropping from the officers hand there was no blood on it," said Kamuela AhQuin.

AhQuin is charged with attempted murder.
