Preventing Dog Attacks

By Brianne Randle

"Like wow, oh my god another pit bull, another pit bull."

Loretta Black and her husband Jeff are shocked at Saturday's tragic attack. As pit bull breeders they specialize in raising and training this specific breed. A breed believed responsible for a young child's death.

"That's ot a good thing to have on our hearts not at all," says Black.

"That maybe the case, but definately we don't feel this is breed specific to a pit bull or a rotweiler,' says Kawehi Yim, Hawaiian Humane Society.

The Hawaiian Humane Society says no particular breed is more dangerous or deadly than another.

"We truly beleive how the animal is raised the enviornment helps to determine if an animal will be agressive or territorial," says Yim.

The Black's have raised three young children among pit bulls. And say there has never been an attack.

"Safety first and foremost, safety is number one, no babies around dogs," says Black. "We all raise our puppies and dogs around our chilren, but there's a limit because dogs have their own boundaries."

Experts believe pet owners have a huge responsibility raising pit bulls.

"It really is the families responsibility, owners responsibility to make sure you have the right fit for you," says Yim.

"Once you own that animal you're responsible for that animal, every action," says Black.

"Accidents do happen and yes it is a reminder to everyone, very unfortunate and my heart goes out to them, i hope it doesn't happen again," says Jeff Black.

The Hawaiian Humane Society says there is only a one-percent incident rate of dog attacks on Oahu.
