One of the Largest Deployments for Hawaii Soldiers Are Underway

By Gina Mangieri

One of the largest deployments to Iraq from Hawaii's Schofield Barracks is getting underway.

For many this won't be the first time -- we met soldiers heading to even their fifth tour of duty, each with a strong conviction about what they'll help Iraqis accomplish.

It's a call to battle many have heard and answered before.

25th Division Commander, Major General Robert l. Caslen says, "The time has come once again for the 25th infantry division to leave tranquil Hawaii for the rugged histile cities and deserts of Iraq."

The men and women, dads and moms will be in norther Iraq by November.

"They will help our friends in iraq move away from the tyranny and bloodshed of terrorism and chaos.">

Many have been there before.

"I think the country needs us, and iraq obviously still needs us, so we're ready to do our job and hopefully bring some stability to the country," says Captain Drew Davies, who will being to Iraq for his second deployment.

The force is 4,500 strong, and they'll serve near where Schofield's stryker brigade soldiers are currently assigned.

"It's a very robust brigade that we're sending over there, so we should have plenty of combat power to link up with the Iraqis and really integrate with them effectively."

Dignitaries from the military, business, community and government were on hand to wish them well.

"Warriors you have come to hawaii an you have been a part of our Ohana when you leave we will miss you, when you return you will have a place you can call home," says Luitenant Governor Duke Aiona.

Many are already looking ahead to that day.

On his 5th tour of duty, First Sgt. Carlos Banks says, "The most important thing to me is taking all 140 of my soldiers to iraq and bringing them back alive. That's the most important thing to me."

The troops will take responsibility for the multinational division north, a part of Iraq where Schofield's tropic lightning division was deployed from July 2006 thru October 2007.
