A Veteran's Birthday Wish Comes True

By Vanessa Stewart

It all started with a birthday wish.

Pearl Harbor survivor Michael Yuhas' 90th birthday wish was to visit Pearl Harbor.

The veteran's wish came true--but not without the help of many.

Veteran Michael Yuhas Senior had not been back to Hawaii since the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor

"I'm choked up," says Michael Yuhas, Sr, Pearl Harbor survivor.

"I can't describe it it brings back so memories," says Yuhas, Sr.

"When the attack occurred we had to go up into our defense positions in the mountains guarding the patrol line," says Yuhas, Sr.

Back in June, family members asked yuhas what he wanted for his 90th birthday.
Making his wish come true took months of planning and help.
The wish upon a hero organization pitched in and thousands donated money to pay for the veteran's trip.

"This is a wonderful trip and I couldn't be more excited than I am right now," says Yuhas, Sr.

"He was just beside himself the fact that people cared enough to do this for him," says Michael Yuhas, Jr.

"Aloha to everybody," says Yuhas, Sr.

"It took Mr. Yuhas 67 years to make it back to Pearl Harbor after surviving the attacks."

Along with his family, Mr. Yuhas arrived at the USS Arizona Memorial thrilled to have made the trip.

A man who normally doesn't stand out in the crowd...he humbly accepted the attention

And, at the memorial paid tribute to his fallen shipmates

"He wouldn't have made it by himself so the fact that the family was able to come with him made all the difference in the world," says Yuhas, Jr.

And his last stop was a birthday celebration at Duke's Restaurant.
As for his next wish, he hopes to make it to 100 years old.
