Mixed Hawaii Reaction to Palin's Speech

By Olena Rubin

Here in Hawaii Republicans and Democrats stand divided after hearing Governor Palin’s speech.

While Republicans praise the Alaskan Governor for her honesty and humor, Democrats continue to question whether she is qualified for the job.

Once Alaska Governor Sarah Palin took the stage to accept her party’s nomination as vice presidential running mate to John McCain, all eyes at the GOP headquarters were glued to the television.

“She's such a motivational speaker straight and to the point she was very clear with her vision for America,” house republican leader Lynn Finnegan said.

Palin is the second woman to be nominated for vice president of the United States by a major political party.

“It’s not easy to command an audience of both men and women and she did a great job,’ Finnegan said.

But some disagree.

“I was hoping to hear her programs, what she was planning, I wanted to hear how they were going to handle the economy and instead I came away feeling that she is a nice person,” senate president Colleen Hanabusa said.

Hanabusa who originally backed Hillary Clinton and now lends her support to the Obama camp says she is not convinced Palin has what it takes.

“I do not believe that she is qualified to be the vice president,” Hanabusa said.

What Hanabusa does believe is America will vote for a woman president soon.

"I think what we have to get to is to measure all the candidates by who they are, not by what sex they are, what ethnicity they are and that's where we got to move to,” Hanabusa said.

And Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle continues to inspire women here in Hawaii.

“When you see Governor Lingle introducing, being there up on a national stage and people really appreciating her for her work here in Hawaii and now for the nation to recognize that that's so inspirational to me,” Finnegan said.

It’s no surprise Governor Linda Lingle played a part in introducing Governor Sarah Palin, who 26 years ago attended what was then called Hawaii Pacific College for a semester.

“One thing though is that Hawaii wins either way, we have got candidates from both sides who are representing the state in various ways and so no matter what the outcome its great for Hawaii its great for politics and certainly is bright spot for HPU,” College of Communication Dean, Professor Steven Combs said.

Both Governor Lingle and Governor Palin were the first women elected as governors of their state.
