Sex Assault Victim Left Oahu with Family to Escape Abuse

By Gina Mangieri

The victim says it started when she was 12 and went on for 8 years.

Manual Taboada was indicted for multiple counts of sexual assault against a victim who followed him faithfully.

Alex McAngus of the Waikiki Beach Chaplaincy says, "I saw nothing but adoration for the man."
"From the victim?"
"From the victim, uh huh. Respect, a sense of what he was delivering in terms of his message."

A message against sin that authorities say Taboada didn't heed.

"He told her if she told anyone that the ministry would fall apart and the children of the other families would be taken away," says Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Vicki Kapp

This Waikiki minister often came in contact with with the Kaneohe group and says he cautioned Taboada about the communal living arrangement that had 20 people on the same property, including the alleged victim.

"Your ministry and the way in which you run your ministry is not the norm. The communal setting will cause people to question what takes place," says McAngus.

Yet the followers did not appear to question.

Kapp says, "The defendant moved the victim into his room with his family to groom her for a leadership position taking her from her family's room and move them into another house.">

"The saying is so true. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely," says McAngus.

The victim this spring finally told her family what had been happening.

"Shortly after this came to light and they found about about it they moved away. They needed to start a fresh beginning in view of what had taken place."

The victim also notified authorities.

"As I explained to both the victim and the parents it needed to be done. It had to be dealt with on a moral level and it had to be dealt with on a spiritual level."

Most of the congregation including the victim and her family had come to the islands with Taboada from Oregon.

"I've worked with all of the members of that ministry and they were diligent, they were faithful, they were caring. The messenger is flawed, but the message is not ."

Taboada is being held on $2,000,000 bail.
