Three People Stabbed on Oahu in 4 Days

By Olena Rubin

A 32 year-old man remains in police custody tonight, accused of stabbing a man near Alii Beach in Haleiwa.

This is the third stabbing incident on Oahu in less than a week. So far one person died and two others have been hospitalized because of their injuries.

According to police, around 4:45 Saturday afternoon a 50 year-old man was slashed with a knife during an argument.

He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police found and arrested the suspect at a friend's house.

“Right across the way,” Haleiwa resident Billy Gilman said.

Several yards away Gilman and dozens of family members are enjoying an annual family reunion.

“Now that we are here for the family reunion and I realize there’s a lot of homeless people here,” Gilman said.

Several homeless people living near the scene of the argument say the suspect is also homeless.

When arrested the suspect did not give police a home address.

Almost one month ago city officials closed Mokuleia Beach Park asking all of the homeless occupants to leave.

Some were hesitant to leave...while others moved right across the street.

Now some Haleiwa residents say the homeless have made a new camp in Haleiwa.

“It’s just an increase they went to Mokuleia now they just pop out all over the place,” Gilman said.

But Residents say it’s not necessarily the homeless they are concerned about... it’s the violence.

“It’s just not right to be stabbing other people,” Gilman said.

A string of other stabbings began Wednesday night around 10 o'clock in Makaha, the victim was stabbed multiple times trying to break up a fight...then taken to the hospital in serious condition.

The next day around 6:30pm, a 35 year-old man was stabbed in the chest and leg then pronounced dead at the Queens Medical Center.

Those who strive to eliminate violence say the effects from acts like these can take its toll on the community.

“Every time we hear about violence in our own community it makes life feel less safe to all of us,” Hawaii Coalition Against Domestic Violence Carol Lee said.

Officials warn not to intervene if you see or hear a fight or argument. Always call 911 for help.
