Vog Wipes Out Big Island Crops

By Tannya Joaquin

When vog moved in to the Oceanview, Pahala areas of Hawaii Island, it had devastating effects on Big Island crops.

"I was wiped out. 100 percent" says Ted Seaman of South Point Propagation and Maile Nursery.

Sam Bayaoa, Owner of Flowers by Kona Scent agrees, saying "I lost everything."

Bayaoa's exotic hybrid protea grown only in Hawaii-- gone.

"The vog has affected me by burning all my leaves" describes Bayaoa.

Crops were first attacked in June, when sulfur dioxide levels from Kilauea hit dangerous highs.

Then this week, levels spiked again, dashing any hopes of saving survivors.

"100 percent loss" according to Bayaoa. "No flowers at all. Just from Monday, the flowers got completely burned. I mean completely crispy burned."

Jeff Mccall of McCall Flower Farm, says " I mulched 2 greenhouses worth of roses because they were dead."

A House Special Committee on vog effects is looking at ways to help Hawaii's farmers, with losses at $500,000 and climbing.

According to McCall, "Our sales last year where $850,000. We're thinking, this year if we're lucky, we'll do 5."

"There's going to be an increase in losses across the board" says Alan Takemoto of the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation.

"It's devastating to see beautiful flowers created for us in Hawaii and Madame Pele has done her thing" says Bayao.

Flowers aren't the only casualty.

Produce is also suffering.

Tomato leaves are yellowing under attack from vog. Watercress leaves, charred by sulfur dioxide.

Green onion tips killed, cauliflower hit hard at all growth stages, and chinese cabbage leaves damaged, making them unsellable.

Farmers say they can't afford to do nothing, while vog destroys the fragile Big Island agricultural community.

They say their livelihoods are in jeopardy without grants or help with water to fight the effects of sulfur dioxide.

They worry the situation will only worsen with no end in sight to the vog, and future harvests where losses have yet to be counted.
