More West Side Beach Parks To Close Overnight

By Andrew Pereira

STORY SUMMARY>>>

Starting July 28th the city will close four additional beach parks on Oahu's West Side in order to control unruly and criminal behavior.

Tracks, Pokai Bay, Lualualei No. 2 and Nanakuli Beach Park will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The Nanakuli-Maili Neighborhood Board voted in favor of the new rules. Chairwoman Patty Teruya hopes closing the parks at night will make them safer for everyone in the community.

"it's been pretty dangerous where we have drug distribution and we have late drinking and parties and that can turn into fights."

Parking lots at the four parks are already off limits at night. The Honolulu Police Department says extending the overnight ban to other areas of the beach parks will give officers more enforcement powers.

"If (park goers) violate any of the rules they will be either issued citations (or) could be subject to arrest if they continue to violate any of the park rules," said Maj. Michael Moses of HPD.
