Superferry Adds Second Trip to Maui

By Tammy Mori

The superferry is revving up to make a second trip between Oahu and Maui, starting tomorrow.

The move is being greeted by mixed reaction.

The Superferry will be making that extra afternoon voyage four times a week....Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

It comes at a time when more are looking for alternative forms of transportation as fuel costs continue to go up and interisland cargo remains uncertain.

The Superferry says their business is gaining momentum.

"It increased from day one to several hundred percent," states Terry O'Halloran, with the Hawaii Superferry.

That increase is allowing them to add this second sail between Oahu and Maui.

"I think it's very important in our state that we do have alternative modes of travels both residents and our businesses," says O'Halloran.

Grower Cheryl Vasconcellos says this alternative mode has cut her shipping prices in half....

"Using the Superferry allows us get our vehicle on board, along with our staff, and we can drive in drive off and are ready to go," she says in a phone interview.

But not everybody on Maui is ready to see more of the Superferry.

"I beleive a second trip a day has nearly doubled harm as far as bringing invasive species in," says Irene Bowie, with Maui Tomorrow.

She also feels the traffic impacts have been ignored once again.

"We're not against the ferry system per say, it shouldve followed environmental law and all these things be looked at before it began operations," adds Bowie.

Another issue that has arose because of this second trip- is who will foot the bill for the superferry's tugboat.

"A tug boat is used to secure the barge to the pier only during the time when the Alakai is in port," explains O'Halloran.

The state refuses to pay for that tug boat service for the Alakai's second trip a day, a price that comes to $750 an hour.

"We're working with the Department of Transportation to resolve that in an equitable fashion," says O'Halloran.

"I'm curious to see what is going to happen if Hawaii's tax payers have to yet again fund a private business," says Bowie.

A one-way ticket for passenger travel on the superferry will be $39 until June Sixth.

After that fares will go up to 49-dollars ..and 65 dollars if you bring your car.
