Power line snags drivers on Likelike Highway

By Manolo Morales

A 138,000 volt power line snapped and landed on the Likelike Highway Wednesday morning, hitting two cars. Both drivers walked away okay.

"This is where the cable, you can see where it bit in and then it bit in over here and ripped all that metal," said Henry Holthaus, one of the drivers.

Henry Holthaus was on his way into town from Hauula when a transmission line that provides power to the windward side of Oahu snapped and landed on his truck.

"Next thing I knew my hood was ripped up against my windshield and I couldn't see anything," said Holthaus.

Holthaus pulled over as quickly as he could. He realized then how lucky he was that the power line hit his hood and not the windshield.

"Had it hit my windshield instead of the front of my car, I wouldn't be here talking to you."

It was raining at the time so he was having a hard enough time seeing the road. Another car heading in the other direction was also hit. That driver also escaped injury. So all things considered...

"I'm just lucky no one else got involved. No one hit me from behind, the guy on my left didn't hit me, I didn't hit him. Everybody was cool," said Holthaus.

HECO, Hawaiian Electric Company, says most of the voltage had shut off by the time it landed, or it would have been a different story. There was no power outage because a backup immediately clicks on once the line snapped.

"So if one of the lines fails like it did in this situation we can transfer the power to another line to continue to service our customers," said HECO spokesman Darren Pai.

Naturally everyone is relieved that nobody was hurt. Now HECO has the task of putting another power line all the way to the top of this mountain. Work crews took a chopper up top about 25-hundred feet up to assess the damage and determine why the line broke in the first place. With one line down, there's concern if other lines might break anytime soon. Holthaus will need a new truck, but he's counting his blessings.
