Shriner's doctor gets ready to deploy to Iraq

By Jai Cunningham

The Shriner's Hospital in Honolulu does hundreds of orthopedic surgeries every year. But at the end of this week the hospital will lose one of its surgeons. The hospital's loss is the US Army's gain.

"I like him because he's nice and because he doesn't tell you what to do. He gives you choices and let's you choose what you want to do," said Ocean Langlois, one of Dr. Ono’s patients.

"You're doing great, you're doing really good," replied Dr. Ono.

But the good doctor is about to say Aloha to his patients at the children's hospital.

“So for the past eight years I've been a member of the Army reserve, and as a consequence of all that's been happening over the past seven years the reserves have been quite busy," said Dr. Ono.

Destined this time for Afghanistan.

"I've been deployed four times to combat zones. Starting in 1990-1991 with operation Desert Storm. While I was active duty went to Kosovo for that mission," said Dr. Ono.

Add to that another tour during Iraqi Freedom. For more than a year Ono and other surgeons at Shriner's have been operating out of this million dollar trailer...Just how different will Dr. Ono's work be?

"Certainly the scope of the injuries are different. They are certainly more critical in a combat zone. But as far as the principles of treatment, with respect to
fractures, and taking care of those sort of injuries. It's similar," said Dr. Ono.

As for his current patient Ocean, she's got a message for any soldier who comes under Dr. Ono's care.

“Yeah, I would say that they are getting a really good doctor that will help them," said Langlois.
