Making the most of your stay in Las Vegas

By Manolo Morales

With airfares on the rise, those trips to Las Vegas might not happen quite as often. Here are some tips to make the most of your visit to Sin City.

Let's face it. Whether you're playing the machines or the tables, only a few will get the chance to win big. So why not take more advantage of comps, what the casinos are willing to give away for free. And it all starts with signing up for a player's card, which earns points every time you play.

"All of a sudden those points start adding up, and they can go anywhere from getting a jacket or a cap to many wonderful things," said Bill Smith, Vacations Hawaii Vice-President.

Some of those wonderful things go beyond what most gamblers have ever experienced.

"Some of our very good players have had wonderful events like going on our private plane to Delta Downs to go to the races. We own a racetrack right outside of Houston, and also go to the Borgata in Atlantic City to go to our five star property there," said Smith.

That's obviously for the big time gamblers. But Smith says comps aren't only for high rollers. You can earn something worthwhile by putting in the time in one particular casino. The common mistake is to try out different places because players want to change their luck. Smith says it's better if they put most of their playing time in one place.

"Being loyal counts a lot at any casino anywhere in Las Vegas," said Smith.

Hawaii gamblers have the luxury of three favorite casinos, all owned by Boyd Gaming, so the points can accumulate from the California Hotel, Main Street Station, and the Fremont. Those who've put in enough time can earn the Gold Card, which allows for an upgrade to a suite along with other amenities.

"Wverything is free. You can drink as much as you want, you can eat as much as you want at any of our gourmet restaurants downtown. And the suites at the Cal are beautiful and they automatically upgrade to there," said Smith.
