The Big Island has become the first county in the state to ban smoking at county parks and beaches.

Councilmembers approved a bill last month making beaches and parks smoke free.

Mayor harry kim vetoed the bill. But Tuesday night, Councilmembers voted 7-to-2 to override his veto.

The ban goes into effect immediately.

Law breakers face a $100 fine.

A similar attempt last year to ban smoking at all beaches statewide failed to gain approval.
