Businesses Prepare for Possible Pilots Strike

By Ron Mizutani

Businesses across Hawaii are preparing for the worst. Last night, an estimated 150 aloha airline pilots voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike of the carrier's cargo operations.

Fujikami Florist is a haven for fresh flowers from across Hawaii.

"We have growers on Maui who supply us with irises, lilies, carnations, you know all kinds of different things and roses on the Big Island," said Fujikami Florist General Manager, George Shikuzawa.

Talks of a pilots strike of Aloha's cargo division is causing much concern.

"This is a perishable thing, it's going to really have an effect on us -- but it will have a huge effect on our growers -- this is their bread and butter too," said Shikuzawa.

Aloha pilots believe their bread and butter is also at stake. Last night, they showed unity.

"It was overwhelming. This is a sad day for the history of Aloha Airlines and its pilots -- 61 years -- we have never been put in a position to have to do something like this," said veteran pilot John Riddle.

Aloha's cargo division handles more than 85 percent of the state's cargo along with mail service for Maui and the Big Island.

"We do not want to go on strike -- but we will not have our contract -- our collective bargaining agreement completely thrown out the window -- we expect adherence to that and we're going to stand by that," said Riddle.

Company spokesman Stu Glauberman responded in a statement: "There is no legal justification for the pilots to strike, so we have filed a complaint in court to stop them from doing so. The National Mediation Board from Washington D.C arrived on Oahu Wednesday to facilitate talks with ALPA and the pilots."

"Trying to meet our obligations is going to be critical," said Shikuzawa.

The decision of when to strike will be up to the pilots themselves.

"We want to fly airplanes that's what we do -- we want to serve the community here in the state of Hawaii don't force us to have to do this," said Riddle.

"Hopefully it will be resolved in a relatively short time, I think it's something they can work out -- I hope," said Shikuzawa.

The pilots union and the company are due in federal bankruptcy court Friday afternoon for a hearing on temporary restraining orders and preliminary injunctions filed against each other.
