Flash Flood Warnings

By Olena Rubin

Hours of constant rain can have potentially dangerous results.

Overnight rain, lightning and thunder triggered the national weather service to issue a flood watch early Wednesday morning.

“Are you prepared? Yeah hopefully ha ha,” a UH Manoa student said.

Most students and teachers at the University of Hawaii at Manoa came prepared to weather the rain.

Consider getting sand bags and tarps if you've been flooded out before.

“People who are in low lying areas, or are prone to flooding, should be aware of the situation and should be listening to TV and radio for updates,” Department of Emergency Management John Cummings said.

“Its just a little rain,” a UH Manoa student said.

Just a little rain can have serious results.

“Anytime we get a lot of loading over several days, or longer, and it starts to saturate the soil, and you know this from years before, when the soil gets saturated the water starts to pond and pool and we get those flooding situations at all of our neighborhoods,” Cummings said.

National Weather Service officials say they are monitoring the possibility of heavy rains and flash flooding over the next 24 hours, but recommend staying clear of driving through flooded areas.

“Basically if the water is higher than the like your hub cap area of your vehicle don't even try it,” Cummings said.

“I don't have boots unfortunately but we'll just see,” a UH Manoa student said.

If flash flooding does occur try to get to high and safe ground. Abandon your vehicle if it is caught in a flood.

It’s also recommended not to go hiking during a flash flood watch, potentially rains could lead to heavy floods.
