New Store Plans to Expand to China

By Olena Rubin

Hawaii officials and entrepreneurs focus on the booming economic growth in China. A new store in Ala Moana plans to target tourists from the country while promoting local products with a campaign to “live healthy, live aloha…lifestyle.”

Smoothies, body products, CD’S and books...just some of the things you'll find at a brand new store located in the Ala Moana center.

“We are all about products from Hawaii supporting the local vendors and producers here in Hawaii,” general manager Jack Pitcher said.

Blue Hawaii Lifestyle, locally owned and operated, specializes in "made in Hawaii products and ingredients”...along with utilizing earth friendly cups and recycled bags.

“Even to the point of our floor which is made out of recycled cork,” Pitcher said.

The owner, Michael Zhang, moved to Hawaii from China when his wife became a student at Hawaii Pacific University...since then it has become his dream to bring Hawaii back to China for others to experience.

“We want to be the first pioneer to bring the hula Hawaii culture in China yeah,” Michael Zhang said.

The flagship store will expand to China within the next few years.

“We plan open next year in Xin Tian Di which is the most shopping mall in China and we will plan open 2010 another 2 store in Shanghai,” Zhang said.

Hawaii established a sister-state relationship with Guangdon, China in 1985...since then four others cities followed.

In an effort to help promote Hawaii in China, Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann traveled to Asia last October pushing for visa waivers to make it easier for the Chinese to visit.

“So if we do a good job of getting over there and promoting the state its going to be more positive development for Hawaii,” Blue Hawaii Lifestyles buyer Matt Olson said.
