Closer Look at UH Security

By Tammy Mori

This school shooting comes just ten months after the Virginia Tech massacre.

That's when universities across the country began detailing security plans in case they were faced with such an incident..including UH Manoa.

The security plans at UH have not yet been completed.

But University officials say in the last few months they have two new emergency systems in the works, aimed to alert students and staff if there is a crisis on campus.

"I just couldn't believe it- i was in shock. I was like again?" says Andelina Moefu, about the news of today's shooting at Northern Illinois University.

"It's a wake up call for every campus that something like that can happen anytime, any place," states Gregg Takayama, Spokesman for the University of Hawaii.

But would U-H be ready in a crisis situation?

Many students are skeptical.

At this point, the only thing they receive is an email alert.

"From what i gather, they don't do much. They do send out an email saying hey keep an eye out for this, or put a flyer around campus," explains Donald Dressen, a UH Student.

"Honestly they never told us what to do in case that happens, especially after Virginia Tech. You'd think they would say something about it- what to do what to expect," adds Andelina Moefu, a UH Student.

U-H officials say the are doing something.

The first system they have in progress is getting all faculty and staff to sign up for an emergency alert system.

"If there is an emergency here on campus, they'll be alerted by telephone, and email simultaneously," explains Takayama.

So far, 1200 staffers out of 5000 have voluntarily signed up for that alert.

And the next plan -is to get students to do the same.

"They'll receive emergency text messages in case of an emergency like we saw today in northern illinois," says Takayama

"Anything to help out people understand to keep an eye out for our own safety is a good way to go," says Dressen.

But students say more should be done, like having a P-A system in all buildings in case of an emergency.

That's something the school is considering

For now, each campus security vehicle is equipped with loud speakers. And that's one way, along with email...they would let staff and students know what to do in crisis situations.

Something officials say cannot be mapped out ahead of time- but planned on a case- by case basis .

"I don't think anyone's truly prepared for when something that tragic happens," adds Dressen.

Campus security says it regularly does drills with HPD officers to prepare for emergencies.

University officials say they will consider doing campus-wide drills once the text message alert system is set up.
